Ideas That Spread = Success | The Best Social Media Marketing Methods 2009

The Top 2 Social Media Marketing Do's |
by Rachael Dror Chicago, IL

1. Create an app

ex. Fed Ex

Fed Ex launched an excellent social media campaign on FaceBook which was on brand and in alignment with an existing consumer need.

As you are probably aware, you can not send attachments using the messaging facility on FaceBook.

The US courier company, FedEx created a branded ap that enbaled people to “Launch a Package”, whereby they could send attachments within FaceBook.

The results were immediate: 100,000 installs in 48 hours, 1st branded app to make #1 on Facebook’s Most Active page, and 0ver 50% of users returning more than 10 times after install. -Jax Rant

2. Develop a Game

ex. New Balance

One engaging approach that’s been used in the past is the creation of games that revolve around a product or service. Marketers attempt to make free, entertaining mini-games that interest as much of the population as possible in hopes to get click-through traffic to their website or purchases of their product. This is exactly what New Balance has done with their Zip running sneaker and the Facebook mini-game “New Balance RUN-Dezvous” by Buddy Media.

The game itself plays a lot like the old-school, Nintendo title Paperboy. You’re out for a run, and you have to dodge things like falling plants, open man holes, street barricades, and so on. It actually looks pretty good too, utilizing an interesting, surreal style of art with a strange isometric point of view. -www.insidesocialgames.com

New Balance made their idea easy to share by adding a challenge function. Players could challenge their friends as well as other random players.

Internet Reputation Management | The Rip Off Report Saga | Conclusion

We are the champions my friends!

The monkey's off our back. It has been more than a week and the Rip Off Report that wouldn't go away is safely buried in the black hole of Google's search results. May it never rear its ugly head again! Want proof? Check this out!

Boo-Ya!

Tell them what they want to hear. The key to reputation management is making sure to actively promote your business message online. If you're not talking about your company, who is? For the most part the only people who care enough to write about a business online are the ones with an ax to grind. Businesses can not afford to ignore their online presence. The internet is the way of the world and what is said online exists as a fragment of information forever associated with your business.

Drown out the bad review nazi. It is said that the answer to hate speech is more speech. The same can be said about bad online reviews. Write articles, update your website frequently, use the power of video to create a buffer. If there is enough "on message" content online then the occasional bad review won't sting so much.

A bad review is like a gangrenous leg wound. You'll either treat it or chop it off. And most likely you aren't going to change the name of your business. You have worked hard to develop a good word of mouth reputation and recognizable branding. Do not let bad online reviews or misinformation go unchallenged. Chances are that if you've seen it so have your prospective clients and customers.

Call off the dogs before you get bitten. When you read a negative review or comment about your company on the web, it is natural to get really pissed off. Take a deep breath, count to ten, have a drink but don't cause more damage to your reputation by reacting out of anger. Think strategically. Do not attack. Always take the high road and emphasize what your business has to offer.

Organic Ranking Systems | Introduction | Part 1

Reputation Management | Removing Bad Reviews | Rip Off Report | Post 2

Today I was with my client who is having problems with Rip Off Report. Due to the high ranking video responses we created to counter the destructive effects of the false accusations lodged with or by ROR, a disturbing development leaves me no choice but to go silent on this issue for now. I will complete my earlier post as soon as I am allowed to do so.

What I can say is that companies must actively manage their online reputation. Silence is as good as admitting guilt. Do not let others define who you are. Be proactive, consistent and aggressive when it comes to your online reputation. If you have a bad review online and need advice, feel free to e-mail me @ Rachael@KatzRecruiters.com

Remove Rip Off Reports| How to Manage Your Online Reputation

Organic Ranking Systems | Lessons Learned About Rip Off Report | Post 1

I first encountered Rip Off Report while working with a client who wanted to do something about a bad review his company received online. Since I have successfully dealt with reputation management issues in the past, I assumed that this one would be no different. I was wrong. Rip Off Report is a site with serious authority. My client had a static website and no information on the web about his company. For three years the only thing that would come up on a Google search for his company name was Rip Off Report.

This is a company who has loyal customers and zero complaints against it with the Better Business Bureau. I knew that using social media marketing tools and outputting good content that represents what the company is all about was not going to be enough to bury Rip Off. Oh, I should mention that my client first looked into Rip Off Report's policy on removing false and damaging reports. It is shocking but a business can only defend itself with a rebuttal (which is not a good idea because like in my client's case this meant that now rip off report ranked number one and number two when searched on Google) or pay to join Rip Off Report's own Corporate Advocacy Program where the business owner must accept responsibility, reimburse the customer and pay Rip Off an unknown but supposedly steep fee. Doesn't this seem like extortion? It certainly isn't ethical but it is legal.

I consulted a colleague of mine who's opinion on ethical matters I trust very much, Lynn Brewer. You know Ms. Brewer as "The Enron Whistleblower". She is also the author of books including;
Confessions of an Enron Executive: A Whistleblower's Story, Managing Risks for Corporate Integrity: How to Survive an Ethical Misconduct Disaster and many others. Lynn commented about our situation with Rip Off Report,

"
Sadly, opinion has replaced fact which can cause great distress. I know that there is Freedom of Speech but there are plenty of court cases beginning to create some precedence for “cyberbulling”. I would agree that this appears to be “extortion”. I would contact the Attorney General of the state where ripoffreport.com is located."

She also recommended a book by Daniel Solove, titled “The future of reputation: gossip, rumor, and privacy on the internet”.

Stay tuned for a review of "The future of reputation: gossip, rumor, and privacy on the internet" and for the solution to our Rip Off Report problem.
